Tearful Tauziat No. 7 seed falls in opener, announces retirementPosted: Tuesday June 27, 2000 01:32 PM
LONDON (Reuters) -- Nathalie Tauziat of France said on Tuesday she would not be returning to Wimbledon and would retire from the sport at the end of the year. Tauziat, 32 and seventh seed here, was beaten 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 by Kim Clijsters of Belgium in the first round of the women's singles on Tuesday. "This year I wanted to come here and play well and I didn't so that's it -- I'm finished," said Tauziat whose recent book on the women's tour -- including criticism of Anna Kournikova -- has upset many in the game. "I've had too much pressure and I've exploded. As the matches went on, the pressure intensified," Tauziat said, breaking down in tears at a press conference. She said she had decided even before the match that she would retire. "I didn't feel the same as in past years, I didn't play the same."
