Kournikova crashes out Glamour girl falls to unheralded SidotPosted: Wednesday June 28, 2000 03:58 PM
LONDON (Reuters) -- France's Anne-Gaelle Sidot shocked world number 19 Anna Kournikova 6-3, 6-4 in the second round at Wimbledon on Wednesday, robbing the tournament of its biggest attraction. The Russian, who had beaten French 10th seed Sandrine Testud in the first round, looked out of sorts on court one as she sprayed groundstrokes beyond the baseline and peppered the net. Her serve let her down badly as Sidot took command of the match, hitting freely and sending her illustrious opponent scampering around the court. The pair exchanged breaks in the opening set but Kournikova's serve was the weaker and Sidot took it 6-3 in 33 minutes. An almost full Court One crowd willed the Russian back into the match but her shots were not firing and she did not have the patience to play herself into points. She was broken in the third game of the second set after careless errors handed Sidot the initiative and the Frenchwoman upped her game, hitting clean winners from the back of the court. Nerves set in while serving for the match at 5-4 and she fell 0-30 behind, but she quickly regained her composure to complete the victory with an ace after 62 minutes.
