LONDON (Reuters) -- Fifth seed Venus Williams marched into the third round at Wimbledon on Wednesday with a 6-1, 6-4 demolition of world number 20 Ai Sugiyama.

The American used a combination of brute force and razor-sharp reflexes to dispatch the Japanese player in 65 minutes.

Serves of up to 120 mph left Sugiyama cowering on the baseline while Williams's returns were equally ferocious, flying for winners from every angle.

She broke Sugiyama, a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open earlier this year, twice in the opening set to sew it up in 27 minutes.

Sugiyama battled bravely in the second set but had neither the ingenuity nor power to be more than a ball-machine as Williams grooved her shots.

Williams, playing only her fourth tournament since last November due to tendinitis in both wrists, snatched the only break she needed in the third game of the second set before serving out 6-4.
