LONDON (Reuters) -- French Open champion Mary Pierce, was knocked out of the second round of Wimbledon on Thursday by Magui Serna of Spain.

Serna served well to beat the French world number three 7-6, 7-6 in 91 minutes.

The 25-year-old Pierce, a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon in 1996, had an early break in the second set but allowed her opponent to break straight back.

The left-handed Serna, 21, hit two double faults to give Pierce, the third seed, a break point in the eighth game but got herself out of trouble with an ace and held.

When the set went to a tie-break, Serna got a break on the first point. Pierce saved one match point with a forehand winner but put a backhand wide on the second.
