WIMBLEDON (Reuters) -- American Jan-Michael Gambill on Friday reached the last 16 of a grand slam tournament for the first time in his career after ousting fellow American Paul Goldstein at Wimbledon 7-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Gambill, who has never quite fulfilled his promise, has shown much sharper focus and determination at Wimbledon where he knocked out second favorite Lleyton Hewitt.

He had not met Goldstein since their college days and the two compatriots looked set for a battle royal after an epic first set tie-break that Gambill eventually won 12-10.

But that seemed to take the sting out of Goldstein who could never raise his game against Gambill, who combined an effective serve with devastating cross-court returns.

Gambill sped to victory, allowing the dejected Goldstein just four more games in the last two sets of what ended as a very one-sided contest.
