Pozzi pushes through Italian reaches fourth round at WimbledonPosted: Friday June 30, 2000 11:40 AM
LONDON (Reuters) -- Italian veteran Gianluca Pozzi, at 35 the oldest player in the men's singles, on Friday ended the giant-killing run of Belgian qualifier Olivier Rochus 6-3, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2. Rochus, at 19 the youngest player among the men, could never quite recapture the fire that helped him topple number three seed Magnus Norman of Sweden in the last round. The Italian, who last reached the 16 at a Grand Slam back in 1994 in the United States, out-thought and outfoxed Rochus. In a nervy first set, breaks abounded before the Italian got the better of the diminutive Belgian, who paid the penalty for staying glued to the baseline. In the second set Rochus rediscovered his form, breaking Pozzi in the first and last games to level the match. Pozzi would not be denied in the third set, saving one set point at 4-5 and then easily landing the tiebreak 7-3. He comfortably outlasted the dispirited Belgian in the final set.
