Going strong Venus overpowers Dechy in third-round matchPosted: Saturday July 01, 2000 01:13 PM
WIMBLEDON, England (Reuters) -- Fifth seed Venus Williams joined sister Serena in the fourth round of Wimbledon on Saturday when she beat Nathalie Dechy of France 6-0, 7-6. American Williams, only recently back on the circuit after six months out with severe tendinitis in both wrists, stormed through the first set in 22 minutes on Centre Court. When Dechy, who as a qualifier beat Williams in the 1997 Canadian Open, finally held serve the crowd broke into sympathetic applause and the Frenchwoman smiled an embarrassed smile. After a late exchange of breaks the set went to a tiebreak which Williams won 7-4 to book a meeting in the last 16 with unseeded Belgian Sabine Appelmans.
