McEnroe says playing for brother would be awkward

MIAMI (AP) -- John McEnroe turns 42 next week and would still love to play Davis Cup doubles. But he admits it would be awkward now that his brother is team captain.

Patrick McEnroe, making his debut as captain, chose a younger squad for this weekend's matches at Switzerland. John had no complaints about the decision.

"He wants to try to do his thing, and there could be issues with other players since we're brothers," John McEnroe said Wednesday. "I think they can win with the team they have.

"But if he wanted me to be there, I would be there. It would be great to be the George Foreman of tennis and come back into Davis Cup. I dream of participating again."

McEnroe quit as captain after just one year, which ended with his team swept by Spain last July.

"There's a stress level that was new to me," McEnroe said. "Maybe Patrick is better equipped to handle it. Maybe he's a little mellower than I am."

McEnroe was frustrated by lukewarm support from top players and a Davis Cup schedule that stretches from February to December.

Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi also dislike the format and say they probably won't play Davis Cup again, but major format changes are unlikely. International Tennis Federation officials contend that players elsewhere are eager to participate.

"That's glossing over the reality," McEnroe said. "I'd like them to take a poll of the players. To say it's just Sampras and Agassi is ignorant."

McEnroe spoke during a conference call to promote this year's senior Champions Tour. He said he plans to continue playing at least a dozen tournaments a year for another two to three years, and he hopes Boris Becker and Stefan Edberg join the tour before he retires.

"I'd like an opportunity to play against those guys," McEnroe said. "I'm looking forward to seeing some new blood."
