NEW YORK (AP) -- No. 9 seed Tim Henman survived a third-set scare Thursday to beat Brazil's Fernando Meligeni 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 and advance into the third round of the U.S. Open.

Henman, a Wimbledon semifinalist, showed no signs of the stomach problems which bothered him throughout his first-round match against Czech qualifier Jan Vacek. He broke Meligeni in the sixth game of the first set thanks to two double faults by the Brazilian and served out the set.

The 26-year-old Briton continued to shine in the second set, breaking the 30-year-old Brazilian in the first game and comfortably taking a two-set advantage in just over an hour.

Meligeni hit back in the third set, breaking Henman in the second game following several poor forehands from the Briton.

But Henman regained his composure in the final set, rapidly improving his serve and scoring 15 winners en route to victory.

"For two sets, I was very solid, very confident, taking my opportunities," said Henman. "I got very frustrated at the beginning of the third set, but I was pleased with the way I regained my rhytm in the fourth."

Next up for Henman is Belgium's Xavier Malisse, who upset 21st seed Fabrice Santoro of France. If he wins, he could meet Greg Rusedski in a fourth-round "Battle of Britons."

Henman has never made it beyond the fourth round in New York.
