NEW YORK (AP) -- Wimbledon semifinalist Tim Henman crashed out in the third round of the U.S. Open, losing in an epic 3-hour, 47-minute five-set battle to 43rd-ranked Xavier Malisse of Belgium.

Malisse, 21, won 6-7 (6), 6-3, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, advancing to the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in his career.

After both players dropped serve in the opening set, Henman squandered three set points before taking the tie-break 8-6.

Malisse clinched the following two sets, taking an advantage of Henman's week serve, before the ninth-seeded Briton broke his opponent in the tenth game of the fourth set.

Henman took a fast 3-0 lead in the deciding set, but failed to make use of his advantage, allowing Malisse to fight back to lead 5-4 and serve for the match.

Malisse, who hit 62 winners and 39 unforced errors compared to Henman's 37 winners and 68 unforced errors, will next play the winner of the match between No. 30 Greg Rusedski of Britain and Mariano Zabaleta of Argentina.
