Sheer power Serena turns it up in second set to crush HeninUpdated: Monday September 03, 2001 3:28 AM
NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Tenth seed Serena Williams overpowered sixth seed Justine Henin of Belgium 7-5, 6-0 on Sunday to advance to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open tennis tournament. Williams was twice down a break in the first set but battled back each time to draw level before breaking the Wimbledon runner-up in the 12th game with three bristling winners to win the opening set. The 1999 Open champion overwhelmed the slender Belgian in the second set, taking advantage of every short ball and second service with her powerful groundstrokes off both wings to conclude the battle of 19-year-olds in 76 minutes.
Williams slugged 24 winners to just six for Henin, who double-faulted seven times in her first-ever match against the American. In the quarterfinals Williams will face 1998 U.S. Open winner Lindsay Davenport, who defeated Russian Elena Likhovtseva 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 in her fourth-round match on Sunday. Davenport eliminated Williams in last year's quarterfinals.
