Sisters slump Serena, Venus fall in doubles tourney
NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Venus and Serena Williams, who teamed up to win the 1999 U.S. Open doubles crown, were ousted 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 by American Chanda Rubin and Els Callens of Belgium in the third round on Sunday. Playing before a boisterous crowd packed into the Grandstand Court, Callens and Rubin, in only their second tournament as a doubles team, claimed victory in one hour and 54 minutes. "It was a great atmosphere, a great crowd," said Rubin. "It was just fun. It was a fun match to play, and especially to win." Earlier on Sunday, Serena Williams advanced to a quarterfinal against third-seeded Lindsay Davenport with a straight sets victory over Wimbledon runner-up Justine Henin of Belgium. The Williams sisters are the last two winners of the women's singles crown at the Open with Venus having lifted the title last year and Serena the year before. "I don't believe I've had that much craziness for a doubles match," said Rubin. "I mean, I've played Venus and Serena twice before here the last two years. You know, it's definitely an event when they step out onto the court." Rubin and Callens lost in the semifinals in their doubles debut in Los Angeles earlier this American summer, but are hoping for even better results. "I think we play really well together," said Callens. "We complement each other because Chanda tries to build up the point for me so I can do something at the net. I think we're a pretty good team. I have fun playing with her."
