NEW YORK (Reuters) -- The exhibition match between Boris Becker and John McEnroe scheduled for Saturday night at the U.S. Open has been canceled after Becker was forced to withdraw with a foot injury, the USTA announced on Friday.

The made-for-television match between the two former champions was to have followed Saturday night's women's singles final.

Becker was diagnosed with Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome of the left foot, which he sustained during practice in recent weeks, the USTA said in a release announcing the cancellation.

The injury worsened this week and doctors advised Becker to rest for at least 14 days.

"I have been training very hard for several months and am deeply disappointed that this injury will prevent me from playing under the lights at the U.S. Open against a good friend and great champion, John McEnroe," Becker said.

Becker won the U.S. Open men's singles title in 1989. McEnroe was champion in 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1984.
