10 Questions Seven-time Wimbledon winner Pete Sampras speaks outPosted: Friday June 22, 2001 12:20 PMUpdated: Monday June 25, 2001 1:57 PM
On tour since 1988, Pete Sampras has a record 13 Grand Slam titles under his belt, including seven at the All England Club. Currently ranked fifth in the ATP Entry System, Sampras is the top seed at Wimbledon, where he will be aiming for his fifth consecutive title beginning next week. Sampras recently spoke with CNNSI.com about Wimbledon and tennis in general.
1. What makes Wimbledon dramatic and exciting for you as a player? The history of the club, the grass court and having royalty sitting in the box makes it very unique. There's no other tournament like it. Every time I walk through the gates of Centre Court at Wimbledon it generates enough motivation for me. I've done better here than just about anywhere else in the world, and breaking the record here last year means it is always a very special place to come back to. 2. What is your most dramatic/greatest memory of Wimbledon? Probably breaking the record at Wimbledon last year. It has taken me a while to realize how special that was for me. 3. Who is your tennis hero? Rod Laver 4. What would you be doing if you were not a pro tennis player? I have no idea. 5. What do you do outside of practice during Wimbledon?
Stay at home, "hang out" and watch movies. 6. What is your conditioning routine? Very basic, light jogging and lots of stretching. 7. What is it like to play on grass versus other surfaces? On grass, the ball bounces very low, goes through the court pretty quick. There is a tendency to have bad bounces, but quick is the best way to describe playing on grass. It really helps your serve. 8. What advice would you give to young tennis players? Develop your game at a young age. Be more concerned about playing well rather than winning. 9. What are your hobbies? Watching movies, playing golf, hanging out and watching sports. 10. What is your favorite tennis major and why? Wimbledon because of the history, because I've done well there, better than anywhere else. For more on the ATP, visit ATPTennis.com
