Kafelnikov, Haarhuis win doubles championship

Posted: Saturday June 08, 2002 4:10 PM

PARIS (AP) -- Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Paul Haarhuis know all about winning Grand Slam doubles titles. They just never had done it together.

The pair beat the No. 2-seeded team of Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor, 7-5, 6-4, Saturday to won their first men's doubles Grand Slam title since becoming partners this year.

It was their first encounter with Knowles and Nestor since teaming up, and Kafelnikov credited the victory to Haarhuis.

"Paul told me, 'I know how to beat those guys. They're a good team but I think we're better,'" Kafelnikov said.

Haarhuis should know, he and former partner Jacco Eltingh won 9 out of their 10 encounters with Knowles and Nestor. One of those victories was the 1998 doubles final at the French Open.

Kafelnikov, himself a two-time French Open doubles champion with partner Daniel Vacek in 1996 and 1997, said he's wanted to work with Haarhius since their initial collaboration in 1999 in Barcelona.

"Paul has proved over the years that he's one of the best doubles players who ever played," Kafelnikov said. "To let that opportunity slip away was a big mistake for me.

Kafelnikov and Haarhuis have a commitment to play through Wimbledon. Any further collaboration will depend upon their schedules.

"I think we understand each other very well on the court," Kafelnikov said. "We'll do well in Wimbledon, I hope."

Junior's results

American Ashley Harkleroad advanced to the junior girl's championship Saturday after beating No. 2-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, 2-6, 7-6 (7), 6-1.

On Sunday, Harkleroad will face Indonesia's Angelique Widjaja, who defeated another Russian, Vera Douchevina, 6-4, 6-2.

Last year Harkleroad appeared in the semifinals of the Australian Open, French Open and U.S. Open.

French final

The homecrowd at Roland Garros will get an all-French final after all.

The winner of Sunday's match between Richard Gasquet and Laurent Recouderc will become the 11th French boy to win the junior championship at Roland Garros.

The No. 2-seeded Gasquet easily defeated Argentina's Brian Dabul 6-3, 6-4.

Recouderc beat Italy's Andreas Seppi 7-6 (5), 1-6, 6-4.

It will be the fourth all-French junior final in the tournament's history and the first since 1982.

The last French player to take the juniors' title was Paul-Henri Mathieu, who won in 2000. Mathieu was the wildcard entry who was eliminated from the men's main draw in the fourth round by Andre Agassi.

Tennis memoribilia

A collection of postcards autographed by tennis champions Suzanne Lenglen and Rene Lacoste were among 200 items of tennis memorabilia auctioned at the French Open. Tennis fans unable to attend the event, which was held after the women's final, were given the option of participating on-line. The auction is the second of its kind to be held at Roland Garros. Last year's auction earned 154,000 euros (dlrs 145,476). The highest bid of the 2001 auction was 12,500 euros (dlrs 11,816) for an oil on canvas entitled "La Joueuse," painted by Emory Clark.
