Doubles trouble Top-seeded Knowles, Nestor upset by BryansPosted: Wednesday September 04, 2002 4:50 PMUpdated: Thursday September 05, 2002 3:04 PM NEW YORK (AP) -- Top-seeded men's doubles pair Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor were upset in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open on Wednesday, falling to Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan 6-3, 7-6 (5). Knowles, of the Bahamas, and Nestor, of Canada, had just one chance to break the serve of the American duo, and they missed. Bryan and Bryan, the third-ranked team in the world, converted one of their six chances. Nestor played the decisive hand in the tiebreaker for the world No. 1 men's doubles team. His chopped volley into the net gave the sixth-seeded Bryans a chance to serve out the match at 5-3. But Nestor sent a serve return rocketing back past the Bryans to tie it at 5-5. Then Nestor netted a volley to give up match-point, and sent another volley long to concede the 1-hour, 19-minute match. Knowles and Nestor were trying to become the third doubles team in the past 50 years to reach the finals of each Grand Slam tournament in a season. The pair won the Australian Open earlier this year and lost in the finals at both the French Open and Wimbledon. |
