Czechs cruise Novak-Stepanek upset Bjorkman-Woodbridge to reach finalPosted: Thursday September 05, 2002 7:44 PMNEW YORK (Reuters) -- Czech duo Jiri Novak and Radek Stepanek upset fourth seeds Jonas Bjorkman and Todd Woodbridge 6-2, 7-6 at the U.S. Open on Thursday to reach their first Grand Slam final as a team. Bjorkman and Woodbridge, the reigning Wimbledon champions, looked shaky at the beginning as the Czech's closed out the first set comfortably. After four breaks in the first set, both pairs tightened up in the second. A Bjorkman smash gave them the set's first break to go up 5-3. But the 11th-seeded Czechs -- who as a team had never advanced past the third round of a major -- broke right back and closed out the match in a tiebreak. They now face the winner of the Bob Bryan-Mike Bryan vs Max Mirnyi-Mahesh Bhupathi semifinal for a shot at their first slam crown.
