Mike Bryan upstages twin to capture title

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- The U.S Open witnessed its first dose of sibling rivalry in a title match at this year's tournament when American twins Mike and Bob Bryan battled it out for the mixed doubles crown at Flushing Meadows.

Mike, two minutes older than his 24-year-old brother Bob, and his partner Lisa Raymond edged out Bob and Slovenia's Katarina Srebotnik in a tight 7-6 7-6 tussle on Friday.

There were no service breaks in the clash but second seeds Raymond and Mike excelled in the tiebreaks as they captured their first title as a team.

Mike closed out the 80-minute victory with a left-handed serve which Bob failed to control.

While the victory gave Mike his first trophy at a major, this was Raymond's third success in mixed doubles. She had earlier captured the Flushing Meadows title in 1996 with Patrick Galbraith before teaming up with India's Leander Paes to take the Wimbledon crown in 1999.

Although this was the first time the Bryan twins faced each other across the net in mixed doubles, the Open could feature a second battle of the siblings should Venus and Serena Williams see off their respective semi-final opponents to clash in Saturday's women's singles final.

The Bryan brothers, who have won four ATP doubles titles this year, had also reached men's doubles semi-finals before losing to Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi.

Raymond and Mike Bryan will split $130,000 winners purse.
