Wimbledon breaks attendance records

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) -- Sunshine and comfortable temperatures combined to help break Wimbledon attendance records for the first week of the tournament, organizers said Sunday.

After six days, 245,000 people passed through the gates of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, nearly 1,000 more than last year's record-breaking figures.

Two other records broken last week included the highest number of people on any day -- 42,457 on Wednesday -- and the highest number for the first Friday of any Wimbledon, 41,595.

Organizers attributed the record attendance to dry weather and temperatures around 20 degrees Celsius (68 Fahrenheit).

There were no matches played Sunday.

All 16 matches involving players remaining in the men's and women's singles draw are scheduled to be played Monday, when rain is forecast.
