Slammed again Loss to Czech perpetuates Stevenson's Grand Slam miseryPosted: Tuesday January 14, 2003 8:13 PMMELBOURNE, Jan 15 (Reuters) -- Alexandra Stevenson's appalling Grand Slam run continued when the 15th seed lost 6-2, 6-2 to Czech Denisa Chladkova in the second round of the Australian Open on Wednesday. Since going through to the semifinals of Wimbledon in her debut in 1999, the American has lost in the first round of 10 Grand Slams and in the second round a further three times. Stevenson added another second-round loss to that record as she threw in 33 unforced errors in a bad-tempered match against Chladkova. She scowled and remonstrated with herself throughout the Margaret Court Arena clash but could do nothing to get her game on track or repel the Czech. Chladkova, ranked 62 to Stevenson's 21, had lost both of their previous matches but was steadier and stronger on a cloudy Melbourne morning. She will next face 22nd seed Anne Kremer of Luxembourg or Australia's Evie Dominikovic.
