Victory takes toll Ailing Henin-Hardenne withdraws from doubles competitionPosted: Monday January 20, 2003 4:27 AMMELBOURNE, Jan 20 (Reuters) -- Justine Henin-Hardenne has pulled out of the Australian Open women's doubles after suffering severe cramps during her fourth-round singles victory against Lindsay Davenport on Sunday. The Belgian, seeded fifth in the singles, had been due to partner with Russia's Elena Bovina against second seeds Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain and Argentine Paola Suarez for a place in the quarterfinals. But on Monday she withdrew to give herself time to recover before her singles quarterfinal against Ruano Pascual. "Justine is recovering from heat illness suffered during her singles match yesterday," a WTA statement read. Fighting back tears, Henin-Hardenne endured agonizing cramps to complete an epic three-hour 13-minute victory against Davenport. "I thought I was going to die, but I played with my heart," she told the crowd later as they gave her a standing ovation. Copyright 2003 Reuters Limited. All rights reserved. |
