Ailing Davenport advances past Dechy Posted: Sunday June 01, 2003 1:38 AMPARIS, May 31 (Reuters) -- Sixth seed Lindsay Davenport struggled with a foot injury before moving into the fourth round of the French Open with a 6-3, 7-5 win over France's Nathalie Dechy on Saturday. The American's movement around court was restricted, and she had lengthy treatment from a courtside trainer in the second set. "I've been struggling with it for about a month, just this nerve in my foot," said the American, who is playing at Roland Garros after a two-year absence through injury. "It comes up through just one toe. I've got good days and I've got some bad days. I took a weird step ... and it kind of inflamed it. "Once it gets inflamed, it's just not happy. The doctor and the trainers think they can calm it down tonight. It's just a day-to-day thing." Despite the discomfort, Davenport managed to dig in and oust the 25th-seeded Frenchwoman. Seeking the only Grand Slam crown missing from her collection, Davenport will be looking to overcome Spanish clay-courter Conchita Martinez. "Conchita was a very difficult opponent for me in the mid-'90s. I think I lost to her something like six or seven times in a row," said the 26-year-old American. "I turned the tide then and don't think I've lost to her in a number of years. But she did beat me pretty badly here in the '96 quarters. "Hopefully I've changed as a player since then."
