Memorable
Quote: "It gives me a great deal of confidence to play
somebody bigger and stronger and still beat him. It's a
David and Goliath thing, of not being afraid to play and
not being intimidated. My strength comes from
that."
I'm Not Dead
Yet: Chang refuses to admit that any situation is hopeless. No
matter how bleak things appear
(Gee, I'm down two sets and two
breaks.... Guess it's time to
play), he never tanks. In 1989, on his way to becoming the
youngest man to win the French Open, he beat No. 1-seed
Ivan Lendl in the fourth round, 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. At
one point, after suffering severe cramps, Chang surprised
Lendl by serving
underhanded, a perfectly legalbut virtually unheard-ofploy.
Open
Fact: In 1987, Chang became the youngest male to win a
main-draw match at the U.S. Open. He was 15 years and six
months old.
We Are
Family: Chang is coached by his older brother Carl. Their
parents, Joe and Betty, travel to many tournaments with
Michael.
