Big Game Hunting: At the 1997 Australian Open, Moya beat Boris Becker (No. 6) in the first round and Michael Chang (No. 2) in the semifinals. He lost to No. 1 Pete Sampras in the final. Before the Australian, Moya had never made it past the second round in a Grand Slam tournament.

Crashing the Party: Moya was the first unseeded player to reach the final of the Australian Open since Steve Denton in 1981 and the youngest Australian Open men's finalist since Stefan Edberg in 1985.
