WASHINGTON, D.C. (CNN/SI) -- Two-time defending champion and top seed Michael Chang of the United States can exact a measure of revenge Friday night when he takes on countryman Jim Courier in the quarterfinals of the $575,000 Legg Mason Classic.

In Friday's first quarterfinal, second-seeded Andre Agassi of the United States, seeking his fourth Legg Mason Classic, plays Canada's Sebastien Lareau.

In the afternoon, third seed and 1996 runner-up Wayne Ferreira of South Africa plays sixth-seeded American Vince Spadea and fifth seed Filip Dewulf of Belgium battles No. 14 Scott Draper of Australia.

Chang lost to Courier in the final of the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships at Orlando in April and remains without a title since winning the Legg Mason last year.

After finishing 1997 ranked third in the world, the 26-year-old Chang has won just 22 of 34 matches while coming up short in two finals this year -- the Kroger St. Jude and in Orlando.

In addition, Chang has failed to advance past the third round in any of this year's three Grand Slam tournaments, including second-round defeats at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, the last tournament he played.

Agassi has gone 32-8 this year with two titles and two runner-up finishes after winning just 10 matches and going without a title in 1997. However, he is coming off disappointing performances in his last two events, both Grand Slams. He lost in the first round of the French Open to Russian teenager Marat Safin and was beaten by Germany's Tommy Haas in the second round at Wimbledon.

Agassi, who defeated Belgium's Christophe Van Garsse for the second time in less than a week Thursday night, won this event in 1990, '91 and '95. Agassi dumped Van Garsse in last week's Davis Cup quarterfinal victory.

First prize at this hardcourt tournament is $95,000.
