Goran Ivanisevic: "I don't think I would have won if it had gone to a third set." AP

SHANGHAI (Reuters) -- Goran Ivanisevic admitted to "almost falling asleep" during his first round win over New Zealander Brett Steven in the Shanghai Open on Tuesday.

The jet-lagged Croatian took the second set tiebreak 10-8 for a 6-4 7-6 victory.

"I was almost falling asleep," said Ivanisevic. "I hadn't slept for three days.

"I don't think I would have won if it had gone to a third set."

Ivanisevic faces Justin Gimelstob, a newcomer to the U.S. Davis Cup squad, in the second round.

Fourth seed Mikael Tillstrom of Sweden lost 6-3 6-3 in the first round to Armenian Sargis Sargsian.
