Ivanisevic, Chang advance at Shanghai Posted: Wednesday October 07, 1998 10:55 AM
SHANGHAI (Reuters) -- Top seeds Goran Ivanisevic and Michael Chang, after struggling in the first round, swept past their opponents to advance to the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Open on Wednesday. Croatia's Ivanisevic, ranked 12th, lost only two service points in the first set, one of them a double fault, and beat American Davis Cup player Justin Gimelstob 6-1 6-4. Second seed Chang had little trouble with Laurence Tieleman of Italy, being taken to deuce on service only twice, both times in the first set, before winning 6-3 6-3. Chang has a day off Thursday before a quarterfinal on Friday against eighth-seed Todd Woodbridge, who has ousted American Jim Courier and Lionel Roux of France. Chang, 13-3 against Woodbridge, said he was not taking the Australian doubles specialist lightly. "Todd's a crafty player," he said. "I have to stay focused." Ivanisevic meets Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark in the quarterfinals on Friday. In a first-round match Wednesday, fifth-seed Paul Haarhuis of the Netherlands put an end to the hopes of qualifier Oscar Burrieza of Spain 6-3 6-4.
