Shanghai finals washed out Ivanisevic, Chang, doubles teams to play MondayPosted: Sunday October 11, 1998 12:18 PM
SHANGHAI, China (Ticker) -- The final between Croatia's Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia and American Michael Chang was postponed until Monday thanks to Sunday's rain at the $315,000 Heineken Open hardcourt tennis event. The doubles final between top-ranked Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde of Australia and India's Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi was also postponed. The 27-year-old Ivanisevic is aiming for his second tournament victory of the season. His only win in 1998 came at his hometown of Split in February. Ivanisevic was also runner-up at Wimbledon in July and the Pilot Pen International at New Haven in August. He owns 21 career titles. Chang, seeking his 12th career title in Asia and 33rd overall, has also won just once this year, at the Boston Cup, where he beat Haarhuis in the final. He won five titles last year and finished the season ranked third in the world. But his ranking has plummeted to No. 33 after a series of injuries. The 26-year-old Chang holds a 5-4 lead against Ivanisevic. The two players met just once before in Asia, with the Croatian posting a 6-4, 6-4 victory at the Tokyo Indoor in 1994. Ivanisevic, the top seed, labored to defeat sixth seed Ramon Delgado of Paraguay, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, Sunday. Chang, the second seed, eliminated fifth seed Paul Haarhuis of the Netherlands, 7-5, 6-3. Both Ivanisevic and Chang are scheduled to play at the Heineken Open in Singapore starting on Monday.
