Philippoussis back on Australia's Davis Cup team

Mark Philippoussis may be back on the team but tensions still loom AP

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- Mark Philippoussis has returned to Australia's Davis Cup team after last year's dispute with the coaching staff and fellow players.

The Australians have named an imposing lineup with two-time U.S. Open champion Pat Rafter and last year's beaten finalist Philippoussis chosen alongside veteran doubles pair Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge and youngster Lleyton Hewitt.

Australia faces a first-round World Group tie against Zimbabwe in Harare in April. Zimbabwe scored a remarkable win over Australia last year when the Black brothers, Byron and Wayne, beat a team ravaged by internal bickering.

Philippoussis had accused captain John Newcombe and coach Tony Roche of failing to support him as his father fought off cancer.

Although a peace deal was worked out by Tennis Australia, there were signs of further tension at the Australian Open last week.

Philippoussis' coach Pat Cash gave an interview in which he said the player "despised" Newcombe.

Newcombe said the opening round match gave Australia a chance of redemption.

"All the guys are pumped, and Tony Roche and myself are delighted we have the best team available for this all-important match," Newcombe said.
