Agassi wins in Salem Open doubles Posted: Tuesday April 06, 1999 08:41 AM
HONG KONG (AP) -- Andre Agassi won his first-round match at the Salem Open Monday, but it was not in singles. Agassi, ranked 12th in the world, teamed with David Wheaton for a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) victory over second-seeded Jeff Tarango and Czech Daniel Vacek in doubles. Agassi, the 1992 Wimbledon champion, will play his first singles match Wednesday, against Italy's Gianluca Pozzi. But a desire to play as many matches as possible resulted in Agassi deciding to play doubles in a tournament he entered as a wild card. Agassi requested a wild card after an embarrassing first-round loss to world No. 40 Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia at the Lipton Championships last month. "I decided then that I needed a couple more matches under my belt," said Agassi, who is seeded third. "I'm feeling healthy and raring to go." "My goal this year is to do well in the Grand Slams, something I didn't do well last year,' added Agassi, who also won the U.S. Open in 1994 and the Australian Open in 1995. Meanwhile, defending champion Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark defeated Argentina's Martin Rodriguez 6-1, 6-4 in an opening-round match. Ranked 99th in the world, Carlsen is on course to face top-seeded Richard Krajicek of the Netherlands in the second round. Krajicek, No. 4 in the world and winner of the Lipton Championships, plays his first round match Wednesday against Japan's Takao Suzuki. In another first-round match, Cecil Mamiit of the United States beat Sebastien Lareau of Canada 7-5, 6-3.
