ATLANTA (Ticker) -- It was not a good day for seeded Americans Wednesday at the $325,000 AT&T Challenge. Fourth seed Michael Chang, No. 3 Vincent Spadea and No. 7 Jan-Michael Gambill all were upset victims. Chang, competing in the featured match, was never on his game and was eliminated by Austria's Stefan Koubek, 6-1, 6-4, in a second-round match. Max Mirnyi of Belarus defeated Spadea, 7-5, 6-3 in a suspended first-round match completed earlier Wednesday. The two split the first two games on Tuesday before the match was delayed by rain. Justin Gimelstob defeated Gambill, 6-0, 6-4, and is matched against fellow American Jim Courier in the second round. Courier rolled to a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Mikael Tillstrom of Sweden on Tuesday night. Guillermo Canas of Argentina, fresh off last week's final appearance in Orlando, Fla., was beaten by Alberto Martin of Spain, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-4), in a second-round match. Canas upset sixth seed Scott Draper of Australia in the first round. In a first-round match delayed by rain and completed Wednesday, Galo Blanco of Spain downed Magnus Norman of Sweden, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). Top seed Patrick Rafter of Australia was upset in the first round, falling to unheralded Martin Rodriguez of Argentina on Tuesday. American Pete Sampras is not defending his title and will lose his No. 1 ranking to Russia's Yevgeny Kafelnikov when the next ATP rankings are released on May 3. First prize is $46,000.
