DUESSELDORF, Germany (Reuters) -- American Andre Agassi said on Sunday he feared he might have to pull out of the French Open because of a shoulder injury.

"It's definitely a possibility," Agassi said when asked whether the injury, which forced him to withdraw from his first match at the World Team Cup, might prevent him playing in Paris later this month.

The former world number one was trailing Frenchman Nicolas Escude 4-3 when he had to quit because of a sore muscle in his right shoulder.

"It's an injury which I sustained three weeks ago," he said. "I thought it had healed but it started to hurt again. The conditions were difficult with cold weather and heavy balls. That didn't help.

"I have to make a decision but I don't want to take the risk of this re-occuring," added Agassi. The Open starts on May 24.

Agassi, 29, reached the final of the French Open in 1990 and 1991. He is currently 13th in the ATP Tour rankings.
