WHITE PLAINS, New York (AP) -- Prize money is increased at the U.S. Open Tennis Championships.

Winner of the singles championship in both the men's and women's bracket at this year's final Grand Slam event will earn $750,000, while runners-up will collect $420,000.

In 1998, the champions received $700,000 and the runners-up earned $400,000.

"We are very proud that the U.S. Open has offered equal prize money for 27 consecutive years," United States Tennis Association president Judy Levering said Thursday.

"We not only have a wonderful tournament for the players, but also the fans, who can enjoy world-class tennis in the finest public tennis facility in the world."

Levering, who also serves as U.S. Open tournament champion, announced that the Open will award a record $14.5 million this year, with more than $1 million going to those in the qualifying. Total prize money awarded last year was $14 million.

This year's tournament, to be held Aug. 30 through Sept. 12, will include a men's super masters event, featuring a number of great doubles teams from the past.

The teams scheduled to participate include Australian pairs John Newcombe and Tony Roche, and Ken Rosewall and Fred Stolle, Americans Marty Riessen and Sherwood Stewart, South African Cliff Drysdale and Owen Davidson of Australia, Roy Emerson of Australia and Tom Okker of the Netherlands, and Spain's Manuel Santana and Tom Gorman of the United States.
