BASTAD, Sweden (AP) -- Magnus Gustafsson opened his Swedish Open title defense with a victory Monday, beating Italy's Vincenzo Santopadre 6-2, 6-4.

Gustafsson, seeded third, is seeking his four tournament title. Compatriots Mats Wilander and Bjorn Borg each won three Swedish Open titles.

Gustafsson, 32, had not played for more than three months due to a back injury.

Top-seeded Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia plays American Jeff Tarango on Tuesday, while No.2 seed Thomas Johansson meets Spain's Alberto Berasetegui, the 1994 French Open runner-up.

Earlier, wild card Andreas Vinciguerra of Sweden beat Richard Fromberg of Australia, 7-5, 6-4.

Germany's Bernd Karbacher was ousted by Martin Rodriguez. The Argentinian won 1-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Magnus Norman, winner of the 1997 tournament, outplayed wild card Mikael Tillstrom, winning 6-2, 6-0. After his win, the 23-year-old praised the fast clay surface at Bastad.

Spanish qualifier Eduardo Nicolas also is through to the second round after a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Hendrik Dreekmann of Germany.

In Monday's only doubles action, top-seeds David Adams of South Africa and Tarango beat the Spanish duo Alberto Berasategui and Francisco Roig, 6-1, 7-5.
