APTOS, Calif. (AP) -- Michael Chang continued to gain momentum for the summer hard-court tennis season Thursday night by defeating Taylor Dent, 6-2, 6-2 and reaching the quarterfinals of the Safeway challenger tournament.

Chang had little trouble handling the power of the 18-year-old Dent, an American who is the son of Australian tennis great Phil Dent and is ranked 270th in the world.

Chang, ranked 59th, will face eighth-seeded Cristiano Caratti of Italy in the quarterfinals. On Thursday, Caratti advanced by rallying past Israels Amir Hadad, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Tournament defending champion Cecil Mamiit, seeded second, was forced to quit with a knee injury while trailing in the third set to Michael Hill.
