STANFORD, Calif. (AP) -- Amy Frazier defeated Austria's Anke Huber 6-2, 6-4 in the first round of the Bank of the West Classic on Monday.

Frazier, a resident of St. Louis, evened her career record against Huber at 2-2. Huber won the last time the two met, in the 1997 Austrian Open.

In another first-round match, Chanda Rubin beat Romania's Irina Spirlea 6-4, 6-4. Rubin, of Lafayette, La., rebounded from a 3-0 deficit in the second set.

Frazier, playing in her 10th consecutive Bank of the West Classic, kept Huber at bay with an effective serve and deep groundstrokes.

Huber said Frazier was effectively putting her on the defensive most of their match.

"She was hitting the ball fast and deep and I couldn't find my rhythm," Huber said. "She played well and didn't miss many easy shots. My return wasn't good enough. I should have done more with it, and put more pressure on her."

Frazier, who won the Japan Open earlier this season, lost to Alexandra Stevenson in the first round of Wimbledon in her last outing.

In earlier first-round matches, Lisa Raymond of Wayne, Pa., defeated Zimbabwe's Cara Black, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2; and Luxembourg's Anne Kremer was a winner over Belgium's Dominique Van Roost, who retired after suffering a strain in her neck during the match.
