Kournikova: I'll play if asked But Russian captain not willing to alter Fed Cup rosterPosted: Thursday October 14, 1999 08:50 PM
PALO ALTO, Calif. (Reuters) -- Although Russian Fed Cup captain Konstantin Bogorodetky said he will not add Anna Kournikova to his squad for the September final against the United States, Kournikova says she is available. "I would play if I was asked," Kournikova said. After Russia beat Slovakia 3-2 without Kournikova to reach the Fed Cup final for the first time, Bogorodetky said, "It would be completely insolent if she came to our team at this point." He added: "All the girls have done a tremendous job in reaching the final and for someone to suggest that we should replace them with Kournikova now would be a total injustice." When informed of Bogorodetky's comments, Kournikova said: "That's fine with me. I told him at the beginning of the year that there would be a very small chance of me playing the semifinal because my schedule was really tough and I needed a break after Wimbledon. The captain knew that January 1. "We'll see. I have no definite answers now." Russia could use 13th-ranked Kournikova against a U.S. squad that will likely feature No. 1 Lindsay Davenport, No. 4 Venus Williams and No. 5 Monica Seles. Against Slovakia, Russia used number 20 Elena Likhovsteva and number 68 Tatiana Panova.
