Appelmans pulls Sanex Trophy upset

KNOKKE, Belgium (AP) -- Local favorite Sabine Appelmans upset top-seeded Ruxandra Dragomir of Romania 6-4, 6-3 on Monday in the first round of the Sanex Trophy.

"I've had some bad results recently, but now it feels good to win here in Belgium," said Appelmans, ranked No. 79 in the WTA Tour.

Dragomir is ranked 27th.

Fifth-seeded Cristine Torrens-Valero of Spain and seventh-seeded Olga Barabanschikova of Belarus also advanced in the clay-court tournament. Torrens-Valero beat Seda Noorlander of Netherlands 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, and Barabanschikova edged Bulgaria's Lubomira Bacheva 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

In other matches, South Africa's Joannette Kruger beat Sweden's Asa Carlsson 6-4, 6-1. Spain's Marta Marrero defeated Michelle Gerards of the Netherlands 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Czech Denisa Chladkova edged Emilie Loit of France 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 7-6 (7-4).
