Kournikova withdraws from U.S. Open

McLEAN, Va. (AP) -- Anna Kournikova of Russia, the world's 13th-ranked women's player, withdrew Friday from the U.S. Open because of a minor stress fracture in her right foot.

According to her management company, Advantage International, Kournikova sustained the injury while practicing last week. She was also forced to withdraw from this week's du Maurier Open in Toronto.

Kournikova is expected to return to competition in September.

The U.S. Open, the year's final Grand Slam tournament, begins on Aug. 30.
