Washington withdraws from U.S. Open Posted: Friday August 27, 1999 03:53 PM
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) -- MaliVai Washington withdrew from the U.S. Open on Monday with a knee injury and will be replaced by Richey Reneberg. "Mal informed me that he had re-injured his knee at the gym over the weekend and it would prevent him from competing at 100 percent for the Open," tournament director Jay Snyder said. Washington originally injured his left knee in the 1997 Davis Cup against Brazil. He has been bothered by the injury ever since and has played sparingly since. Reneberg, 33, will be competing in the U.S. Open for the 12th time.
