FILDERSTADT, Germany (AP) -- Defending champion Sandrine Testud of France beat American Chanda Rubin 6-3, 6-2 Monday in an opening-round match of the Porsche Grand Prix.

Testud, ranked 13th in the world, next faces U.S. Open champion Serena Williams.

Williams is seeded third in the tournament, which has drawn 22 of the world's top 25 players led by No. 1 Martina Hingis and No. 2 Lindsay Davenport.

Williams beat her sister Venus on Sunday to win the lucrative Grand Slam Cup in Munich, Germany.

Testud, playing aggressively, broke Rubin's serve in the sixth game of the first set and went on to win in 67 minutes.

Russia's Elena Lichovtseva needed just one hour to beat three-time French Open champion Arantxa Sanchez Vicario 6-1, 6-4.

France's Amelie Mauresmo withdrew with an injury. Russian teen-ager Anna Kournikova and Switzerland's Patty Schnyder pulled out earlier.

Most of the top players begin competition Tuesday and Wednesday.
