Coming up roses: After a hard-fought battle, France's Mary Pierce (right) came out on top against fellow countrywoman Sandrine Testud. AP

LINZ, Austria (AP) -- Top-seeded Mary Pierce defeated Sandrine Testud 7-6 (7/2), 6-1 Sunday in an all-French final of the $520,000 Generali Ladies WTA Tour tournament.

Pierce's victory was her first title this season, just one year after she won the Seat Open Luxembourg last October.

"I survived against some very tough opponents this week," Pierce said.

Testud, the tournament's fifth seed, was making her first appearance in a finals this year. She had seen her WTA rankings slip to 19th, after a career high 11th in February 1998.

Testud, who eliminated another French player, Sarah Pitkowski, in Saturday's semifinals, held on in the first set to level at 6-6, before allowing Pierce to seize the advantage and take the first set 7-6 (7/2).

Testud admitted she got nervous during the first set when she led 5-4.

"My hand began to shake," she said.

Pierce kept up the pressure in the second set, allowing Testud just one game.

Both players were competing in Linz for the third time.

Pierce, who made the quarterfinals in 1992, collected a winner's check for $80,000.
