MELBOURNE, Australia (Reuters) -- Australian tennis officials said on Tuesday a new 10,000 seat stadium would not be ready for the Australian Open in January.
The A$65 million (US$42 million) multi-purpose venue which, like Centre Court, has a retractable roof was announced in February last year.
"We all thought we may have a race to the finish, however, after a site inspection late yesterday it became clear the MPV will not be ready for January 17, 2000," Tennis Australia president Geoff Pollard said in a statement.
"We always knew it was an ambitious project in the prescribed period of time, but we were hopeful that the dedicated team assigned to the construction may have defied the time constraints."
Tennis officials said ground pass prices, which were set at A$20 due to the new stadium access, would now be lowered to A$17. Corporate clients who purchased tickets for the stadium would be given dedicated Show Court One seating.
