POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (AP) -- Don Budge, the first player to win the tennis Grand Slam, was in critical condition for a second day after his car struck a tree in the Pocono Mountains on Tuesday.
Budge, 84, broke his leg and might have internal injuries. However, a hospital spokesman on Wednesday would not elaborate on his condition, other than to say it was unchanged.
Budge was driving in Milford in northeast Pennsylvania when his car went off the road at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Rescue crews had to cut him from the wreckage. He was airlifted to St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie.
In 1938, Budge won all four Grand Slam tournaments in the same year. The only other man to win the Grand Slam was Rod Laver in 1962 and 1969. Budge was The Associated Press athlete of the year in 1938.
Budge was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame in 1964 and selected one of Tennis Magazine's 20 greatest players of the 20th century.
