MELBOURNE, Australia (Reuters) -- Australia's triumphant Davis Cup team was honored with a ticker tape parade through the streets of Melbourne on Wednesday in recognition of this month's historic win over France.

Each of the seven players who represented Australia over the year were joined by coach Tony Roche and captain John Newcombe on a parade to the city's Town Hall.

More than a dozen former Australian Davis Cup greats, including Frank Sedgman and Neale Fraser, also joined in the parade.

Australia will kick off their Davis Cup defense in Switzerland next April.

Newcombe said his dream was to see Australia defend their title with a Melbourne final against a full-strength U.S. team including Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi.

Sampras and Agassi have signed on with new U.S. captain John McEnroe for a first round away tie in Zimbabwe in February after skipping the international competition last year.
