PERTH, Australia (AP) -- Thailand secured the final spot in the Hopman Cup tennis field by winning both singles matches in their qualifying match against Japan at the Burswood Dome on Saturday.
After Tamarine Tanasugaran gave her side a good start with a 6-1, 6-3 upset win over Ai Sugiyama, teammate Paradorn Srichaphan sealed the win by downing Japan's Takao Suzuki 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).
In its debut at the mixed teams tournament, Thailand earned the right to join Australia, the Slovak Republic and Austria in Group B.
They face Australia -- the pre-tournament favorites and defending champions -- on Tuesday. South Africa, which plays Belgium on Sunday, the United States and Sweden are in Group A.
