GOLD COAST, Australia (AP) -- Third-seeded Conchita Martinez of Spain beat Sylvia Plischke of Austria 6-3, 6-4 Sunday, the opening day of the Australian women's hardcourt championships.
In other first-round matches, Barbara Rittner of Germany beat 10th-seeded Magui Serna of Spain 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, and Rita Grande of Italy defeated Annabel Ellwood of Australia 2-6, 6-0, 6-2.
Martinez, the 1994 Wimbledon champion, slumped to a career-low ranking of 15 at the end of 1999. She said her goal this year was to return to the top 10.
Top-seeded Julie Halard-Decugis of France, who was struck with the flu Friday, plays her first match Monday, in doubles. Her first singles match is Tuesday.
