PARIS (Reuters) -- Tennis world No. 1 Andre Agassi was named the leading sports personality of 1999 by French sports daily L'Equipe on Monday.

The 29-year-old American, winner of the French and U.S. Opens last year, led an American clean sweep of the top rankings in the poll, with sprinters Michael Johnson and Maurice Greene second and third and Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong fourth.

"Winner last year at Roland Garros and Bercy, the American champion best confirmed his return to the limelight in the French capital," the newspaper said.

"His world number one ranking, his two grand slam victories, his Wimbledon and Masters final as well as his budding romance with Steffi Graf have made the Las Vegas kid the undeniable sports star of 1999," it added.

L'Equipe crowned Zinedine Zidane as the 1998 sports person and Pele as the sportsman of the century.
