GOLD COAST, Australia (AP) -- Sixth seed Nathalie Dechy of France had an easy time beating Nicole Pratt on Monday, handing the Australian a 6-0, 6-2 loss at the Australian women's hardcourt tennis tournament.

Despite having the best year of her career in 1999, in which she broke into the top 60 for the first time, Pratt had no answers against Dechy.

"She's only 21 but she's very talented and the French girls have set the tone," Pratt said. "If she keeps playing like that then I'd predict she would definitely be in the top 20 in a few months."

Earlier Tuesday, another French 21-year-old, Amelie Cocheteux, reached the second round with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (7-9), 6-4 victory over Russian Alina Jidkova.

In other singles matches Monday, German qualifier Jana Kandarr beat Slovakian Tina Pisnik 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 and Italian Tathiana Garbin beat Magdalena Grzybowska 6-2 6-3.
