HONG KONG (AP) -- World No. 1 Martina Hingis said Monday she is ready to defend her Australian Open title later this month in Melbourne, but is not sure if she will return to stake a claim for the gold medal at he Sydney Olympics.

Hingis said that she has made no plans to participate in the Sydney 2000 Games in September.

"That is so far away in a tennis player's life. I can't really answer that now," said the 19-year-old Swiss, in Hong Kong for a four-day exhibition tournament which commencs on Wednesday.

"I feel good about going to Australia to defend my Australian Open title. I have had a month off tennis and I feel fresh and strong," she added.

Hingis, winner of the last three Australian Opens, spent the past month skiing in Colorado, horseback riding in the Czech Republic and swimming and generally relaxing back home in Tampa, Florida.

"I have had a great time. Now my resolution for the New Year is to remain as world No. 1, stay healthy and do as good as I can," added Hingis.

"It may be a new millennium and a new beginning, but it is the same routine for me and I will try to do my best so that I stay on top," she said.

Hingis was accompanied by her mother and coach Melanie Molitor in Hong Kong.

Other players appearing in Hong Kong's Millennium Cup tournament include Mary Pierce of France and Americans Jennifer Capriati and Mary Joe Fernandez.
